"The Happy Hippopotami" by Bill Martin Jr. is about a hippo holiday when the hippopotami go to the beach and spend their day having fun. I enjoyed the fun, rhyming pattern the author uses through out the story. This book would be fun to read to children because of the rhythm and because the story is silly and funny. ( )

Great story of hippopotamuses going to the beach. Definitely anthromorphic animals included but this book was so much fun! The rhyming about the hippopotami was great and I just loved the whole thing and so did the kids. ( )

cute idea - but nearly impossible to read aloud- pictures were cute - but seemed like writer was more interested in making rhymes than creating a story... ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0152333827, Paperback)

Climb aboard the picnic buses for a happy hippoholiday! This lively rhyming story of a seaside romp where hippopotamamas, papas, sons, and daughters are soaking up the sun, strolling along the boardwalk, and dancing around the maypole makes a perfect read-aloud. “Seeming to spill off the pages with their jollity, Everitt’s spirited illustrations are sure to endear these playful creatures to kids--who will have as much fun as the hippos do.”--Publishers Weekly
