It's generally less well regarded (I'm being polite about that here) but as I own the omnibus edition I thought I might as well carry on. The only Haldeman I've read is Old Twentieth and I really loved it. Might have to give The Forever War a try. Thanks for the review! You know I have never read The Forever War which is odd as it sounds really good. Thanks for the review.
I also second the recommendation of L.A. Confidential (although I like the film equally, very different though) The Forever War by Joe Haldeman is a first person account of an 1100 year war (although due to time dilation it only lasts 10 years for the narrator) between humans and an alien species. "Any more questions?" Finally started on The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. Depending on how this one goes I may jump straight into the sequels as I bought the omnibus edition. I never would have thought to rate Steakley in the same category as Starship Troopers, or Forever War. Sure same genre, but nowhere near as good a story or writing. I'm about halfway through The Forever War. "How would you say Forever Peace compares?"
The Forever War makes my list of Top Science Fiction. Forever Peace doesn't come close to making it.
My comment at the time of reading probably sums it up: "I read it, I'll probably forget about it some day."
... they're the same author until fairly recently - I remember that they were a bit silly and certainly nothing like as good as Forever War. How would you say Forever Peace compares? >6 & 9: Forever Peace does not live up to The Forever War. It's fair, at best.
BTW, it's not really a sequel—Haldeman, himself, has stated that. It just happens to share some background. #6 I've a feeling that Forever Peace may not live up to Forever War (or it'd be easier to get hold of), but I don't know about you, but I still want to find it at some point!
