A couple of years ago I only wanted to read The Time Traveler's Wife and last year I only ... Finally got a copy of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.
Also, volumes 2 and 3 of Kristin Lavransdatter to complete the trilogy. ... Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. Book Two, not as good as Book One (much gorier), but still a good read.

I was one who was wowed by James Frey's A Million Little Pieces despite the controversy.
I, too, recommend The Glass Castle. I commend the author for her journalistic approach to her odd childhood and her ability to go on to a successful career and stable adulthood.
I also ... I absolutely loved reading The Glass Castle. It was beautifully and lovingly written.
I read another memoir within a couple of weeks of that, called The Mistress's Daughter by A.M. Homes which suffered in the comparison. She sounded whiney and selfish.

Fish: A Memoir of a Boy in a Man's Prison is another rough read but T. J. Parsell makes the harrowing ride worth taking.

Choices include From A to X by John Berger (which just made the Booker longlist), Water for Elephants, The Glass Castle, and Middlesex. There's lots of fantasy and a fair bit of nonfiction as well. Stop by and check it out! I also read and enjoyed The Liars Club and the loved The Glass Castle. I didn't see Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller mentioned here yet - it's a wonderful story of growing up in Africa. ... by Syrie James.

My favorite memoir I've read recently is Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm during the Great Depression by Mildred Armstrong Kalish. Other good memoirs from the past couple of years have been Bad Blood by Lorna Sage, T ... 6, 7
The Glass Castle is phenomenal. Another that reminds me of it, although on a slightly different topic, is Sickened: the memoir of a Munchausen by proxy childhood by Julie Gregory although, according to my sister-in-law, there is evidently some controversy around that one. #6: I LOVED The Glass Castle, though it is very hard to read at times. My review is here . I was waking up from a nap when I posted earlier and felt like I was ... I've heard wonderful things about The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls - high on my TBR list ... mentioned books in the genre would include Eat, Pray, Love as well as books by Anne Lamott. Jeanette Walls's The Glass Castle is another example.

I just finished The Glass Castle which was wonderful, and I've started on Einstein's Dreams which is wonderful too. I read about both of them here and probably wouldn't have come across ... ... that is. I'm considering a re-read of The Eight although I've already read it 2 or 3 times over the years.
#76 Elee The Glass Castle is probably the best book I've read this year. I agree with you. Her love for her parents absolutely shines through, even though they were less-than-ideal ... I am reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, after seeing it mentioned many times here on LT. I'm about half-way through and am enjoying it immensely. Jeannette Walls does such a wonderful job of portraying her parents, and it's clear she loves them very much. My favs are:

I am reading an ARC called The Power Makers by Maury Klein and am finding it fascinating. It's slow going, though, so I'm ... richardderus: I can completely understand how The Glass Castle is too much even vicariously....same goes for Dry, though I thought that book was easier to relate to because we've all either been there or known someone who was. I'm doing a happy dance for you and Mr. Man that you've each found ... ... to abandon a book my S.O. was incredibly deeply moved by, one that gave him the "Kafka experience" from a post far above...The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls was too much for me, especially after living through his experience of the book.
I think I will have to abandon What Entropy Mean ... ... a rare gem. Lucky for me, he's agreed to accompany me (albeit a little later) on my impending move to NY from Texas.
The Glass Castle is one of the books I've had to abandon. Mr. Man relates to it all personally, and I was appalled during our early courtship at the things it brought ... ... was wonderful and touching, but something about it just didn't work for me.
mckait: I completely see what you mean about The Glass Castle. I'm really enjoying it, but it feels weird to say that since everything she writes about is so awful. I'm just about to finish The Glass Castle and can't wait to begin The Lace Reader.

Just started The Glass Castle last night and haven't been able to put it down. I was appalled by the things she had to go through in just the first 50 pages...it's unbelievably horrifying, and I'm looking forward to getting further and finding out how she moves beyond such a traumatic childhood. I only have 2 for June - The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and Stone Creek by Victoria Lustbader, an ER book. Team of Rivals is my top read so far this year. Most entertaining (ie, good airplane books) have been Glass Castle and Three Cups of Tea. Most interesting literary work has been Disgrace. I have not had an overall fav fiction read yet, alas, so I'll be checking out other people's favs ... ... by Leif Enger - I'll be VERY surprised if I read anything that will edge this book out of my top spot for 2008

I read an interview with the author where she talked about how many people had to convince her to write it. She thought no one would be interested in her memoir or would believe this is ... I hope if they do decide to publish more Kafka, they use the new, superior Pasley edition with Harman's translation of The Castle and Mitchell's translation of The Trial. When I read The Trial in German (the Brod edition with additions of deleted passage), I was struck by how Kafka's complex ... ... I liked it a lot but didn't fall in love with it.
