I must state the positive before the negative. The illustrations are wonderful. This book is certainly written in poetry form. I don't think the whole book should be read in one sitting. A teacher can read one poem at a time stretching it out for awhile. The poems are clever and I do like the book, but I don't believe this is a book one can read in one sitting. ( )

Elizabeth Swadow, the author of the text, uses the term vagabond zoo in reference to Mr. Sidney's animal store. This book containing different poems, all center around one main idea, and that is the animals, although are homeless, still have a place to go. They have Mr. Sidney to help them find a home. It was very entertaining and contained great use of colorful, and I loved the illustrations by Anne Wilson. ( )

Mr. Sidney owns a pet store with many different types of animals. This book goes through all the animals in his pet store with a poem on them. The poems are partly characteristics of the animals, and partly just fun. This would be good to read when teaching poetry. Poetry can be written on anything you want it to be and it doesn't always have to rhyme. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0439554764, Hardcover)

Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Liz Swados shows her animal magnetism with this hilarious pet store poetry collection.

Cats, dogs, turtles, emus -- there's a place and poem in SIDNEY'S ANIMAL RESCUE STORE for every kind of critter. Meet heavy metal cockatoos who like to rock and roll, snooty llamas speaking French, alley cats with attitude, and even a batch of baby alligators.

Kids will tweet, howl or hiss along to the romping rhythms of Liz Swados's poems and the colorful fun of Anne's Wilson's illustrations.

At the Animal Rescue Store, it is up to kind-hearted Sidney to find just the right homes for his abandoned animals, so he is very careful when making his decisions.
