What I think the author does extremely well is capture a child's perspective. Doug and Harry's irrational fear when the teachers are gone at the beginning or the fact that Doug is afraid to go underground because he read Tom Sawyer and was frightened by the section where Tom and Becky are trapped in a cave. The characters were real third grade children. As for the story, it was fun and entertaining enough, although not as exciting as other beginning chapter book series. This is a great book to ease children into chapter books. It's great for reluctant readers or for lower level readings. I think it would be a great book for a teacher to use to introduce chapter books into a guided reading group. I think this book is great for 2nd and 3rd grade. no reviews | add a review
