Oh, gee, is that why the Russian River is called that! Fort Ross, the onetime Russian outpost on the California Sonoma Coast, has a brief, but fascinating history. The fort itself remained in the hands of the Call family for a century, after passing from the Russians to John Sutter and a few others relatively unscathed (save the wanton stripping of the surrounding land of its forest and the native americans of their culture). The uniqueness of the buildings captured the imagination of local residents and the State of California, becoming one of the first State Parks in early 1900's. Careful reconstruction is replacing the initial haphazard but well-meaning efforts of rebuilding. Universities from around the country now are using archaeological techniques to determine foundations and boundaries. Many arson fires have destroyed the unique buildings, but the rebuilt structures are strong, eerie, remnants of our ties with another culture. ( )
