Translating at least bits of Vergil's Aeneid is a must for anyone learning Latin. If you are learning Latin on your own this is the perfect book to help you transfer from doing grammar exercises and reading sentences to reading real Latin. Try to follow the method described in the introduction. Read through the first time paying attention to the case, gender, number and function of the words. Try to make a sensible whole of it even if you don't know what every word means. Read through a second time picking up the meanings of any words you don't know from the interlinear translation and make your translation better. Only then read the English translation in the margin. It is slow going work, but it is really the best way to build up proficiency and independence from your dictionary and grammar. ( )
