You have to be in the right mood. This was the wrong book to follow The Bass Saxophone and The Shadow of the Sun.
3.5* All worth reading tiffin, particularly The Shadow of the Sun. I am recommending it all over the place. It's a popular Penguin, so is around cheaply at the moment .
