The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. One of the best books I've read this year. @376 roland, how can you say such things? Arnie & Jim couldn't make a bad movie if they tried and then add in the deliciousness of Jamie Lee Curtis and you have a true gem of a film.

... read any of that series, so I will be on the lookout for them. It looks like something I would really enjoy. I have The Lies of Locke Lamora here to read somewhere. I really must get to it sometime!

... of con men Locke & Jean and it's funny, entertaining and gripping but unfortunately disappointing compared to the 1st one (Lies of Locke Lamora, which I adored and recommend). I just feel it wasn't as tightly written or as polished at the first, still I am looking foward to the next one. ...

Most of my favorite fantasy is neither epic nor long-series based, but. I would second the Lies of Locke Lamora recommendations, although I'm not sure it counts as 'epic' and in many ways does not have the strong 'fantasy' feel. But it is very good. I also enjoyed the Sabriel trilogy ...

Just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora and loved it! Now I gotta get the next one.

It's hard to pick just one! Some 4.5-star books from this year: Legend by David Gemmell The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch (finished last night) Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days by Alastair Reynolds Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover

Also (#6) finally getting around to reading The Lies of Locke Lamora. So far, it's living up to the hype. Still working on Gormenghast from last month. Slow going. I love reading about Steerpike and Dr Prunesqallor (and Mr Flay, for that matter), but every time the narrative turns to Titus ...

Two fantasy books this month: Donaldson's Fatal Revenant and Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora. The first volume of Donaldson's "Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" left me a little dry, but I loved his earlier Covenant books so much I couldn't give up on them. The Lynch book comes so highly ...

... (but seems to be a love-it/hate-it deal), Temeraire is a series and I'm not sure the first book functions as a stand-alone. The Lies of Locke Lamora will function as a stand-alone. I'm a fan of most of the works above, specifically The Lies of Locke Lamora and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I was hooked young, but my favorite fantasy books then remain my favorites now - Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown. I mention them because they're a bit ...

AHS-Wolfy in FantasyFans : Where To Start? (Jul 24, 2009, 5:37pm)

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch could almost be classed as historical fiction if you remove some elements and may be a good starting place for you. Magician by Raymond E. Feist would be another possible starter for you. It's not too complex but if you enjoy this one then ...

I too stoped Sword of Truth at book one. I would recommend Scott Lynch but be prepared, there may be a long wait. He plans for seven and the 3rd is getting delayed. Also the same with Rothfuss he has an obvious trilogy but why so long between 1 and 2? The Malazan recommendation is by far ...

... never be a list that EVERY fantasy fan should read. Tastes differ widely. Seems like Locke Lamora is in fashion this week. I'm halfway through Red Seas under Red Skies.

> 4 It is not possible to hate Locke Lamora!!! Is it?

I have just reread The Lies of Locke Lamora which I suggested for my reading group which is tonight. I am taking a tin hat and a flak jacket though as I fully expect everyone else to hate it. I enjoyed rereading it though I did skip some of the descriptions which are a bit long. Thank goodness ...

... over just who's screwing who. There's a lot going on in this book but I would certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed The Lies of Locke Lamora. The interaction between Locke and Jean is staggeringly good and contains many laughs and poignant touches to keep the pages turning. Please Mr. L ...

Darn, I didn't get here in time to vote. I actually already own a copy of The Lies of Locke Lamora which I haven't read yet, so I would have picked that one. We'll see if I can get to the library/afford the other one to participate in this. :)

Mine are currently tied between debut books by two authors, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson and The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.

... the safe environs of Midkemia/Kelewan when this solo effort is so accomplished. More variety please Mr.F.! Also read The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Well worthy of the praise it's been receiving since its release. As soon as I read the prologue I ordered the second volume ...

OK, right now, Lies of Locke Lamora and A Song for Arbonne are tied neck and neck. My vote is A Song for Arbonne, since it's the only one of the four I've never read. I'll close the voting when I get home from work today. So speak up if there's any other voices!

... to Camorr to hang out a while with The Gentleman Bastards. I ordered its sequel as soon as I read the prologue of The Lies of Locke Lamora.

... I've looked for "City of glass", but it still hasn't come to Norway yet:( So, next week i'm going to read another book: the lies of Locke Lamora by Scott lynch.

Just got out of the City of Camorr with Locke Lamora. Now I'm afraid of joining him in Tal Verrar 'cause I had such a great time and don't want to end up pining for the next volume so soon.

... vote's standing (and maybe make drneutron's tabulating a little easier, so if it doesn't please yell at me so I know): The Lies of Locke Lamora: readafew, katylit, cal8769, maggie1944, Morphidae, kawika (6) A Song for Arbonne: jennieg, Shanra, sandragon, JannyWurts, Musereader, Tane (6) ...

... some of my favorites. Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Actually I recommend pretty much anything he writes! The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is a good fantasy caper story, sort of Ocean's 11 in a fantasy setting.

Watership Down here too, only because I already own it and haven't re-read for ages. I will buy Lies of Locke at some stage soon though.

Another for Lies of Locke Lamora.

*sigh* It is hard to pick just one, but if you insist, I vote for Lies of Locke Lamora 'cause I haven't read that one yet and it's on my TBR pile, just calling to me. But it would be lovely to re-read A Song for Arbonne or Watership Down, both of which I love. One of these days I'll ...

Well since I am on a self imposed book buying hiatus, I have to vote for The Lies of Locke Lamora. I just read it a couple weeks ago and it was really great. I can participate in the discussions otherwise I'll have to bow out this time.

I've collated the inputs from our nominations thread, and the four most popular books are: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch A Song for Arbonne by Guy Gavriel Kay Watership Down by Richard Adams The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon Please vote for ...

I'd be happy with Lies of Locke Lamora, The Little Prince, Song for Arbonne, Watership Down or Peter Pan or anything by McKilip. Those all sound good to me.

... Richard A Song for Arbonne Kay, Guy Gavriel Though I wouldn't mind reading Peter Pan Barrie, J.M. or maybe even The Lies of Locke Lamora Lynch, Scott Beatles1964

... the ballot from the last go-round (minus the winner, or course): The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Solstice Wood by Patricia A. McKillip A Song for Arbonne by Guy ...

... I'm glad to be done with it. Now, I'll finally be able to sleep again :P Scott Lynch has done it again in his sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora. Locke and Jean have been tricked into serving the archon of Tal Verrar, Maxilan Stragos, and are on a new adventure. This time, while attempting ...

Lies of Locke Lamora turned from an okay to a great read. I finally finished Children of God, I found it okay but not something I'd seriously read again. Then The Innocent which was a bit Mary-Sue ish. Hob's Bargain was much better, very enjoyable. Patricia Briggs is an author who ...

I am reading the Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch its pretty good although there is a slight, modern characters in medieval fancy dress vibe.

I'm currently reading Lies of Locke Lamora which is proving a bit of a slog, though it's turned a corner today.

I'm halfway through The Lies of Locke Lamora and it's pretty good. I have to say though that I don't like the way Lynch jumps around in time. I also liked Swordspoint quite a bit. I haven't read anything else by Kushner, though. I am currently enjoying The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. I have been struggling with The Darkness that Comes Before by Bakker for a while but can't seem to really get into it.

I am reading... The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch The Poet by Michael Connelly The Hunt Club by John Lescroart

Oh, and a more recent one, The Lies of Locke Lamora, which is set in a sort of Venice during what I gather to be around the mid-18th century. On some other world :-)
