Vi befinner oss i Chile på begynnelsen av 70-tallet. Pinochet sitter ved makten, og alle annerledes tenkende blir henrettet eller forsvinner ganske enkelt.

Irene vokser opp i en rikmannsfamilie, og lever det gode liv. Da hun faller pladask for Francisco, som jobber for motstandsbevegelsen, kommer hun opp i et dilemma. Det er nemlig umulig for henne å fortsette sitt bekymringsløse liv dersom hun skal tro på det han forteller. Da han til slutt viser henne noen av massegravene hvor likene av forsvunne mennesker ligger, er det ingen vei tilbake. I tillegg har de nå militærpolitiet i helene og plutselig dreier det seg om en kamp om liv og død.

Filmen er utrolig vakker, noe ikke minst Antonio Banderas og Jennifer Connelly må ta sin del av æren for. Rollen som Francisco er som skapt for Banderas!
