As usual, Julia Quinn writes an amazing story and yes, I had tears in my eyes at the end - again! Perhaps, because of the dark and sad side of the story it's not for everyone, but I loved it and thought it was wonderful. My favorite to date of the series! I highly recommend it! (and that sexy voice of Simon Prebble narrating on audiobook - swoon!) http://ktleyed.blogspot.com/2009/04/w... When Francesca Bridgerton (a couple of years widowed of the former earl of Stirling) finds herself drawn to her dead husband's cousin Michael, she filled with guilt. Michael feels similarly, especially since he's been in love with Francesca since the moment he saw her - a few hours before she married his cousin... Wonderful, very romantic and sexy. Not as cheerful (definitely more sad than most of the other books) but the characters are still delightful intelligent and charming. Michael Stirling knew he loved her when he saw Francesca Bridgerton for the first time. Unfortunately, she was only 36 hours away from marrying his cousin and best friend, John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin. Almost worse is that Francesca and John remain very much in love throughout their marriage, with Michael the occasional third wheel. He gets up close and personal with a woman he can never have, a woman he would never even try to have because he loves his cousin, but a woman that he loves. They become very close friends. Then, John dies tragically and unexpectedly. Michael can’t handle Francesca’s grief or his own and he flees to India. Four years later, Michael knows it’s time to return, and heads to London early to avoid Francesca, with whom he has not corresponded. Francesca heads early to London to find a husband, because she desperately wants a child. Unsurprisingly, they collide, and neither can handle the attraction that they suddenly feel for each other. This was a really different take on romance. I can’t remember another book like it, or even one in which the heroine was previously happily married. There might be one, but my experience is a bit limited. Anyway, it’s always the male who has had the experience, whether it comes to previous marriages or affairs. Here, though, both of them have to deal with John’s memory and how to reconcile their feelings with how he would have seen things. I think it’s well done. Francesca especially struggles, because she was happy and she loved John and she’s afraid he’d think she was betraying him. I also liked how the tone of the book was different from the rest in the Bridgerton series. Not only is the situation very different but the main character, Francesca, is described as feeling a little distant from her family because she’s more serious than they are, though with a snarky edge. Not only does Quinn tell us that, she shows us as well, a fair mark of her talent I think. This book is angsty (although I never thought of it that way until I saw another reviewer say so) and less “fun” than her other books, but its different take on romance and emotional strength are well worth it. I nearly cried at the end, twice, and honestly, who could say that about a typical bodice ripper? Julia Quinn is definitely my favorite romance author. If you’ve ever considered reading romance or you’re just in the mood for something lighter, start with her. She consistently produces quality stuff with a slightly different edge and with much more between the characters than physical attraction. http://chikune.com/blog/?p=511 Finally, a Francesca in a romance novel that isn't evil, or someone's hidden mistress! And this breaks all convention, starting with the heroine very happily married to someone. I kept on thinking of Love Actually, with the poor lad in love with Keira Knightly - by the end of the book, I half believed I looked like Keira Knightly. Now that's some suspension of disbelief! Everyone knows that a Bridgerton marries for love and lives happily ever after. Well, Francesca's story is unique in that her first husband died. So, instead of an innocent heroine we have one that has suffered tragedy. This wasn't my favorite in the series but it is very good. If you read this, you should also read the second epilogue. Not as good as the other Bridgerton stories. I love this book!!! It's different than a lot of books out there in a lot of ways. First, Michael is Francesca's best friend - not some man she saw and fell madly in love with. Secondly, it's Michael who's pining, which seems against the grain - and I'm very glad because I'm tired of it always being the girl's job to pine. Thirdly, it's the first book I've read where the hero suffers from malaria for a significant portion of the book. Fourthly, it's one of the few books I've read where the widow actually truly loved her husband before he died. Fifthly, this book begins very sadly, and a touch of that sadness continues through the rest of the book. Despite that, this book is amazingly good. Very touching, and sweet, and really everything a romance novel should be expected to be. Michael, while prickly and tortured, is completely lovable - although far from perfect - and Francesca struggles to come to terms with her husband's death and her growing feelings for his cousin and her best friend. Truly charming!!! When He Was Wicked - Julia Quinn (6/10) Historical romance; book 6 in the Bridgertons series. Okay, I think I'm done with these. There was too much angsting in this book - "Oh no, I'm in love with my dead brother's widow and that is just so bad" - and I felt the characters wallowed in the situation rather than getting on with doing something useful. Not nearly as good as the earlier ones, although Francesca's conversation with her mother about falling in love again after being widowed was nice. Excellent book in the Bridgerton Family series focusing on Francesca and Michael. This book is different in tone from the other Bridgerton books, just as Francesca is different in personality from her Bridgerton siblings. It's more serious and less lighthearted and funny. It's still an excellent book, and a highly enjoyable read! |

This is the sixth book in the Bridgerton series, and quite a bit darker than the other ones. Later on in the book, the tone lightens somewhat, but it is still the heaviest book of the series. It goes beyond most historical romances, but I like mine a bit lighter. Still, it’s a very good read. (
