This book was really, really good! It's filled with a lot of romance, action and mystery. Though some parts are really predictable. Like, I knew who Jocelyn was WAY before the characters in the book did. But other parts, like the where abouts of the Mortal Cup was, that was really suprising! The only thing is, I don't know why the book is called the City of Bones. It doesn't fit the story at all! I think Cassandra Clare should've thought of a more fitting title to this book. But all in all, it was AWESOME! ( )

I liked this YA fantasy book a lot, and I'm not a big fantasy reader. Fifteen-year old Clary discovers the existence of Shadowhunters, warriors committed to ridding the world of demons. Then her mother disappears, and she is attacked repeatedly by strange creatures. Why can Clary see demons, and why are they after her? The Shadowhunters would like to know as well...

I don't think the plot of this book is highly original, but I did enjoy several of the characters quite a bit. Not a bad read if you're missing Harry Potter and sick of The Twilight Saga. ( )

This book is about a girl named Clary who thought she knew who she was. After her mom gets kidnapped and she witnesses a murder by three strange invisible people, she realizes that she is someone different and about to enter a world where there are demons, angels, and people like her- Shadowhunters. She becomes friends with Jace, Alec, and Isabelle, at the same time trying to protect Simon, her mundane best friend. In this book she has to try and save her mother and find out the real truth about herself and her past.

Clary Fray considers herself to be a pretty typical teenage girl. Interfering, over-protective mother aside, she doesn't have too much to complain about. But after a strange club encounter with a trio of weapon-wielding, gorgeous teens, she begins to question the reality around her. And when her mother disappears, Clary may be the only one who can find her - but at what cost?

One of the very best new fantasy series I've read this year. Clary is believable, and the pages just kept turning. Excellent! ( )

Like many other reviewers, I too had trouble slogging through the 400 pages of inconsistent characterizations, massive plot holes and overall poor timing. The characters were so reminiscent of other YA novels only here their personalities came off grainier and not very sharp. And let’s discuss our villain for a moment shall we? 1) a human who claims to hate anything non-human but 2) will kill humans for his own nefarious purpose the first chance he gets by 3) using his minions of non-humans under his control. Confusing much? And the big plot revelation? I kept thinking: “No, she’s not going to go there…is she? I mean she can’t -- can she?!” And me again, 100 pages later: “Ahh! She did go there! Blech!! Blech!!” Another peeve was that the author kept defining words that really didn’t need to be – come on, the average YA audience isn’t THAT dumb!So in a nutshell: meh.. ( )

Epigraph
I have not slept.

Between the acting of a dreadful thing

And the first motion, all the interim is

Like a phantasm, or a hideous dream:

The genius and the mortal instruments

Are then in council; and the state of man,

Like to a little kingdom, suffers then

The nature of an insurrection.

- William Shakespeare,
Julius Caesar
I sung of Chaos and Eternal Night,

Taught by the heav'nly Muse to venture down

The dark decent, and up to reascend. . .

- John Milton, Paradise Lost
Facilis descensus Averni:

Noctes antque dies patet atri ianua Ditis.

Sed grandium revocare superasque evadere ad auras;

Hoc opus, hic labor, est.

The descent beckons

as the ascent beckoned.

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments)

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0743566572, Audio CD)

A deliciously exotic urban fantasy that is sexy, mysterious and dangerously good fun!

When 15-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
