The Runner’s Literary Companion is a volume of writing that I let languish on a shelf, unread, far too long. Garth Battista has put together a gem of a compilation, all the parts of which have a connection with the act of running. That is not too say that they are all primarily about running but they all use running in some way, either directly or indirectly. There are 24 works of prose and another 25 poems. Most are whole works while others are excerpts, including one excerpt each from the classics Once a Runner and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner.

I found many of the stories captivating, in part because I am a runner myself, but also because they were just plain well-written. I commend it highly, whether you run or read. And if you do both then you are in for a rich treat! ( )
