Used to have this one when I was little...this was written after Sandberg's first retirement in the middle of the 1994 season, a retirement characterized by him walking away while seemingly still a productive player and leaving $28 million dollars on the table. I enjoyed this when I was younger, as I wasn't alive during the '84 Cubs season and was only three during the 1989 playoff year, so I never got to see Ryne at his peak. But as I got older, I realized that there's not much depth to this book. There's an anecdote from John Feinstein's Play Ball in which he talks about Ryne being a nice guy but not really having much to say, and that perfectly sums up this book. You don't really learn anything about Ryno here that you couldn't learn from reading a basic online bio (aside from the Larry Himes criticism, maybe), and that's damning with faint praise, indeed. Still, this isn't terribly expensive...if you happen to be a fellow Cubs fan, you might get something out of this, and it doesn't appear to be going for too much money on various web outlets.
