Un professore (MacGowran) e il suo assistente (Polanski) si recano in Transilvania per studiare il fenomeno del vampirismo ma torneranno vampirizzati. La prima e la migliore parodia del genere si snoda attraverso una lunga serie di trovate esilaranti, assemblate con il gusto infantile per il divertimento puro. Le citazioni cinefile (Bela Lugosi, Dreyer) sono prive di intellettualismo e funzionali alla narrazione. Scenografia (Wilfred Shingleton) e fotografia (Douglat: Slocombe) fanno a gara per costruire quadri memòrabili, ora evanescenti ora accesi, in perfetta sintonia con il clima fantastico della storia. L'atmosfera horror è adeguatamente sottolineata dalla musica di Krysztof Komeda, che spesso si scioglie in accordi irresistibili, come quelli che ritmano la sequenza del balletto vampiresco. Soggetto e sceneggiatura sono di Polanski e di Gérard Brach. La ragazza vampirizzata è Sharon Tate, allora moglie del regista. ( )
