Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent ... so I had to go. Right?
I got:
Hurry Down Sunshine by Michael Greenberg
Circling My Mother by Mary Gordon
Self Made Man by Norah Vincent
The Black Veil by Rick Moody
Snow Angels by Stewart O'Nan
The Inner Circle by T.C. Boyle
'She's a woman. She doesn't have balls."
Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent
"So, I'm not just imagining it?" "He said this more as a statement than a question and I agreed."
Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent
"You haven't told anyone anything we said the other day, have you?" "That how guys are."
Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent
"What are most guys looking for in a woman?" When it was still July (i.e., yesterday), I started Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent. It's an "immersion journalism" account of a woman who lived disguised as a man for one year. "Just remember that the difference between your people and my people is that my people bowl without irony."
Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent
"Yeah, well how do think I feel?" "My eyes widened at the prospect."
Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back by Norah Vincent
"Did women really pretend to be men in real life?" I had fun with Self Made Man by Norah Vincent, about a cisgendered woman's year-long experiment into living as a man (or at least posing as one most of the time), although I didn't always agree with it.
It's more "fun experiment as an undercover drag king" than "soul-searching memoir of a gender ... 16. Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent
Excellent book. I liked the way that Vincent confronted her pre-conceived notions with an open mind and was really willing to learn. It was a very difficult process for her, obviously, which was interesting to read.
17. I Capture the Castle by ... Three of my favorites are Self Made Man, The year of Living Biblically, and Going Gray. I've given them a short review on this site, and they are reviewed in greater depth on Amazon. All three are available on Amazon for the Kindle, as well as dead tree format. >6 & 7
Actually, Self-Made Man was a pretty interesting book in many ways.
Personally, my favourite chapter was the chapter where "Ned" joined the bowling team and learned how adult males interacted with each other as well as with kids (there was a boy that often came to the bowling alley ... I have been eyeing the Self-Made Man as well. It really does look interesting, but my tbr list is so long already, I haven't picked it up yet. 2. Self-Made Man: One Woman's Year Disguised as a Man ... Came To Town
Nella Last - Nella Last's War
Christina Lamb - The Sewing Circles of Herat
Norah Vincent - Self-Made Man
To answer my own question, above, I read 133 fiction and 95 non-fiction in 2007, almost the same balance as in 2006, even though I thought I tried to read ... I am reading Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent for my book club. It is a true story of a woman who disguised herself as a man and spent a year as "Ned" while writing about her experiences. I have finished a chapter on her being in a male only bowling league and a chapter on going to strip clubs as ... ... on Sunday featured a wonderful Gay Pride sermon by a member of ours, Meredith Guest. She talked about a book entitled Self Made Man by Norah Vincent, which sounded very good.
If you'd like to read Meredith's sermon, it's online at http://www.uupetaluma.org/sermons/sermongaypride.htm ... ... I wouldn't have given it a chance had I not had it already & had nothing else to read. Pretty much a waste of time.
3. Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent: I love memoirs & I also love social-experiment-type books. I originally heard about this on "Dateline" or "Primetime" or one of those ...
