A perfect picture-book story. A clear and engaging story, lovable characters, fun artwork, etc. Nice that the reader gets to be in on the joke before Officer Buckle realizes what’s going on, and Gloria’s expressions make it clear that she never meant to do anything to hurt Officer Buckle’s feelings. You’re left feeling affection for both characters, as well as Claire who only appears in letters, and very happy at the conclusion of the story which works out nicely for everyone. Yay! :) ( )

Officer Buckle LOVES safety rules. He loves to post them, follow them and share them with the local elementary children. These school presentations lean towards boring dullness, until Officer Buckle gets a partner. Officer Buckle's new partner is Gloria, and she is a trained police dog. She's trained so well that she silently 'acts out' the rules and Officer Buckle presents them. But when Officer Buckle finds out that Gloria has been entertaining folks behind his back, he is less than thrilled....

This is a very fun book. Officer Buckle likes to think up Safety Tips and present them to children all over the country. Whenever he goes to give a speech to the children, he brings his companion Gloria. It is not until Gloria, a new police dog, adds humor to the safety show that it becomes popular. When Officer Buckle sees that the kids are more interested in Gloria than in him his feelings are hurt.

This is a very fun book. An excellent book that would be good for children and this book teaches a number of good safety tips.
For your classroom make a list of safety rules and have a local police officer come talk to the students about safety. Great for grades K-4. ( )

Officer Buckle knows more about safety than anyone in the town of Napville. But whenever he tries to share his safety tips, nobody listens.Until, that is, the Napville Police Department buys a police dog named Gloria. Gloria has different ways of demnstrating safety tips to the town! www.readwritethink.org has lots of activities and lessons that children and adults alike would enjoy.

This picture book is about Officer Buckle and his boring safety presentations that are brought to life when he introduces his new police dog, Gloria. This is a great book for elementary children to read. The illustrations are wonderful (although not as vivid as the animated version, of course), which is why the book received The Caldecott Medal. The expressions on the students' faces as well as Gloria's really tell the story and it is easy to see the mood of the safety presentations both before and after Gloria was introduced. I recommend this book for my library (medium public library). ( )

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0399226168, Hardcover)

Officer Buckle is a roly-poly bloke, dedicated to teaching schoolchildren important safety tips, such as never put anything in your ear and never stand on a swivel chair. The problem is, Officer Buckle's school assemblies are dull, dull, dull, and the children of Napville just sleep, sleep, sleep. That is, until Gloria the police dog is invited along! Stealthily pantomiming each safety tip behind Officer Buckle's back, Gloria wins the children's hearts. Meanwhile Officer Buckle assumes the cheers and laughter are all for him. As the master comedian Jerry Lewis once explained, every slapstick artist needs a straight man! Children will be highly entertained by the laugh-out-loud, adorable illustrations in this 1996 Caldecott Medal winner, while learning the value of teamwork and a pawful of nifty safety tips.
