Veli Dominic löytää taistelutantereelta tarinankertoja Egil Grimmesenin pään. Pää vaatii, että hänet viedään hänen kuninkaansa, kuningas Pendan, luokse, että hän voi täyttää kuninkaalle ennen taistelujen alkua antamansa lupauksen. Ennen sitä pään on kuitenkin kerrottava lukuisia kertomuksia.

Kertomukset ovat hauskasti kansanperinteen omaisia saduntapaisia ja todella hyvin kerrottuja. Pidin kirjan tyylistä.
