Play by Arthur Conan Doyle and William Gillette (1899). This superior 19th century entertainment was one of a number of such plays revived by Trevor Nunn during the 1970s. Sherlock Holmes was a vehicle for the RSC's most idiosyncratic leading actor, John Wood. After wintering at the Aldwych as a classy holiday show, it toured the UK; before the end of the year it was playing on Broadway. Wood was succeeded by John Neville and Robert Stephens (the actor pictured on this playbill from the Broadhurst Theater).
