Con Ann Sothern, Kirk Douglas, Jeanne Crain, Jeffrey Lynn, Linda Darnell, Paul Douglas, Thelma Ritter. * Una commedia degli equivoci condotta dalla voce fuori campo (nell'originale di Celeste Holm) di un personaggio, Eva (ma in originale è Addie) Ross, che non compare mai, e una cui lettera semina il panico fra tre sue amiche, annunciando che se n'è andata con uno dei loro mariti. La provinciale ingenua e pasticciona (Crain), la scrittrice di radiogrammi (Sothern) biasimata dal marito professore (Douglas) e la bellona (Darnell) che ha sposato un ricco possidente, ripensano al loro passato e alla loro inadeguatezza, e tremano. Il gioco dei flashback e le perfette geometrie dell'intreccio celano uno spaccato pungente e cattivo della borghesia americana. In anticipo sui tempi la polemica contro la volgarità dei mass media, di cui si fa portavoce il professorino. Mankiewicz vinse l'Oscar sia come regista che come sceneggiatore; l'anno dopo farà il bis con Eva contro Eva. ( )
