An incredible story. Taken from a diary kept by a teen-aged German immigrant who enlisted in the Army of the U.S.A (his phrase) and following him through his service in Upstate New York, Georgia and other continental places in between, we get a rare look at stateside service from the eyes of an enlisted man. This is not the Bemelmans that your average Madeline reader would conjure up. This is Bemelmans' diary when he was an American soldier stationed at a military hospital near Buffalo, New York. The stories he tells are often surprising in their depiction of military life and his fellow humans. ( )
