This is the best book nobody's ever heard of.

Anne de Vries, a Dutch novelist, was asked to write a book to commemorate the years of Nazi occupation. The result was a beauty of a work, much liked (as I hear) in its home country. Unfortunately, the only translation--by Harry der Nederlanden--is slightly stiff.

As German troops roll into Holland, the de Boer family resign themselves to living under the invader. Soon, of course, they are drawn into the underground resistance. I won't give away much more, except that it's a thoughtful, exciting, moving book.

Watch out for a few fictionalised nods to famous Resistance heroes--including the ten Booms! ( )
