"The Modern Movement began as a revolt against the bourgeois in France, the Victorians in England, the puritanism and materialism of America". Thus Connolly introduces his selection of books and writers from 1880 to 1950. I think Connolly's selection will remain relevant longer than its bombastic continuation by Anthony Burgess, though he himself realised that his selection from 1940 to 1950 must necessarily be more tentative than that of earlier and better established writers.
