Take the time to read this fabulous book about the people who founded the state of Texas. Historical charaters mixed in with the fictional folks come together for a story so compelling after I finished it I was ready to move to Texas! I read this during winter break from school. I was getting my B.S. in education and had 3 kids but I desperately needed a good fiction read to take me away from the craziness that was my life. This book was the ticket. Don't let the size scare you away--it's one of the best. ( )

One of Michener's best efforts. Historical fiction with the rich landscape of Texas as the subject. ( )

While planning a trip to Texas, I decided to go ahead, take the plunge, and read Michener's book. I was lucky enought to go to San Antonio and see the Alamo at about the same time as I was reading about it back in our hotel room. I love that great state, and their GREAT football team, and now Michener's book. I think this was one of my favorite books of his--my only complaint is that it did not start with the beginning of time (I am hoping Mexico does). I love how everything came full circle, and how the charachters and their families were throughout the book. ( )

James A. Michener manages to educate you a little while also creating interesting enough stories around the State of Texas United States of America. He covers the natives, the influence of Mexicans in the area, and more modern issues like the obsessions with oil and gridiron. Pretty interesting book, in general.

Got to be a lot of research in something this long. This is a pretty cool trick to pull enough. I wonder how many library chairs he wore out back then while working on it. ( )

I was surprised when shortly after New Year's Day of 1983, the Governor of Texas summoned me to his office, because I hadn't been aware that he knew I was in town.

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0375761411, Paperback)

In this magnificent historical novel, James A. Michener masterfully combines fact and fiction to present America’s richest, most expansive and diversified state. Spanning four and a half centuries, this monumental saga charts the epic history of Texas, from its Spanish roots in the age of the conquistadors, to its modern-day American character, shaped by oil and industry. A stunning achievement by a literary master, Texas is a tale of violence and conflict, patriotism and statesmanship, growth and development. Among Michener’s finely drawn cast of characters, emotional and political alliances are made and broken; loyalties are established over the course of Texas’s remarkable history, only to be betrayed by the expansion of wealth and industry. With Michener as our guide, this novel is as exciting as it is informative.
