A good trip into the history of Texas, from its start as a Spanish mission to its days as a republic to present day. Michener's style is a bit stale, but he does keep the reader entertained enough so he doesn't lose him.Pack a lunch though with this one its a long trip. ( )

Well worth the time it took to read, for all the skeptics who think I'm nuts every time I start something like this. :) Michener's stuff is so fascinating! And a cool place to learn about, considering American politics these days. Interesting to understand the "spirit" of the people and place. ( )

This wasn't as good as some of his earlier works, so I was disappointed. Still, it was an interesting read. ( )

Take the time to read this fabulous book about the people who founded the state of Texas. Historical charaters mixed in with the fictional folks come together for a story so compelling after I finished it I was ready to move to Texas! I read this during winter break from school. I was getting my B.S. in education and had 3 kids but I desperately needed a good fiction read to take me away from the craziness that was my life. This book was the ticket. Don't let the size scare you away--it's one of the best. ( )

One of Michener's best efforts. Historical fiction with the rich landscape of Texas as the subject. ( )

I was surprised when shortly after New Year's Day of 1983, the Governor of Texas summoned me to his office, because I hadn't been aware that he knew I was in town.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0375761411, Paperback)

In this magnificent historical novel, James A. Michener masterfully combines fact and fiction to present America’s richest, most expansive and diversified state. Spanning four and a half centuries, this monumental saga charts the epic history of Texas, from its Spanish roots in the age of the conquistadors, to its modern-day American character, shaped by oil and industry. A stunning achievement by a literary master, Texas is a tale of violence and conflict, patriotism and statesmanship, growth and development. Among Michener’s finely drawn cast of characters, emotional and political alliances are made and broken; loyalties are established over the course of Texas’s remarkable history, only to be betrayed by the expansion of wealth and industry. With Michener as our guide, this novel is as exciting as it is informative.
