Another, more modern-feeling take on the "generation ship that gets lost" theme. Of course, the history laid out here is far from anything that could remotely be considered canon, but it's interesting history, and I like it. All in all, a pretty good outing.

This novel is science fiction that is heavy on the science. It also does a very good job of filling in behind the scenes details of the Federation, Starfleet, the Enterprise and Captain Kirk. Some may be put off by the lack of constant action and swift pace of later novels, but that should not deter you. A really good read if you will stick with it. ( )

Lots of attention to detail. ?áLots of explanations of science, character development, strategies to solve the problem. ?áSome interesting ideas, some points at which I just shook my head in disbelief. ?áThe cover here, giving Uhura a corner, somewhat fits, as she is in command briefly. ?áThe cover I read (blond girl w/gun looking like she'll ambush Kirk) is wrong.

Specifically I learned that this is Gerrold's 18th book... doesn't seem right; I'll have to investigate.
I like that a catastrophic variable is named Ellison's star.
I appreciate the reference to the tradition in the La Forge family for breeding fine officers for Starfleet" including the contemporary Admiral George La Forge.
I like the use of 'waste' as an expletive and wish it had caught on as soon as this was published." ( )

This novel is by an outstanding science fiction author who wrote the script of one of the most beloved episodes (The Trouble With Tribbles) in the original Star Trek Series. If I don't rate it more highly, it's that especially given that background, I found the novel disappointing--more emphasis on the hard science than the characters: a bit arid, even if well done in that regard. Book description
FROM THE LOG OF CHIEF MEDICAL, OFFICER LEONARD McCOY

The young woman brought back aboard the Enterprise by Lieutenant Reilly's contract team is responding well to treatment; physically, there' no question she's going to be fine. I"m more worried about the culture shock, the mental strain imposed by the sudden discovery that the world she's grown up thinking of as the be-all and end-all of the universe is nothing more than a spaceship - a ship we need her help to gain control of before it and her entire world are destroyed. So far her response has been to regard everything that's happened as a "demon trick"; this could be masking some deeper strain, but we don't have the time right now for a gradual indoctrination. The captain has to convince her - and soon - that the crew of the Enterprise/ is not composed of "demons" - And he'd better do it before she gets a good look at Spock.

    4496.1 -THE GALACTIC WHIRLPOOL

Kirk was about to stop her when Chekov interrupted - he hadn't even finished sitting down.

there isn't time," he said flatly. And the expression on his face was one of near terror. As heads swiveled i his direction, he said "That ship - the Wanderer - in thirteen months, it will be beyond all help."

"Eh?"

"They're headed for Ellison's star = a catastrophic variable - in fact, it's the largest catastrophic variable in this spiral arm of the galaxy."

"But that's almost two light years away - surely we can do something to keep them from hitting the star - "

Chekov shook his head. "It's not quite that simple. What is going to happen is that the star will exert just enough pull on them to make an alteration in their course - a significant alteration, They're gong to be pulled into a new course a hundred and eleven degrees off their previous heading. And that new course will put them headed straight toward - " Chekov paused, and Kirk could see the beads of sweat on his forehead, "Straight for the galactic whirlpool.
