Chaos ensued when the rain began pouring. Babies began crying, animals hollering, and traffic was a nightmare! People were bickering and horns were honking. It seemed as though they would never be happy. But then, the rain stopped… (2000, K-2)

The rain came down by David Shannon can have multiple uses in the classroom. It could obviously be used as a story to read during a rainy day, but it also could be a starting point for a class discussion about moods and feelings and why certain events can have such an impact on the way we act. When the rain came down, everyone in the area became angry and rushed and irritable, but once the sun came out, they began to all get along. It sort of makes you think about how different the world would be if we all just put aside out differences and made our own sunny days. ( )

One sunny saturday morning turns into chaos when all of a sudden it starts to rain. The chickens squaked, the cat yowled, the dog barked, the traffic stopped, the people faught and still the rain continued to fall. Then in the end the rain stops and the people become happy and stop fighting. This book would be great to teach about repetition and cause and effect. ( )

A wonderfull book about what happens in a town when it rains. All kinds of things go wrong when it rains. Everyone is angry and mean becuase it is raining. Then one day it stops. Everyone becomes happy. The illustrations in this book are great. ( )

This story is a pattern, repetition book that follows the causes and effects of rain pouring down in a little community. Thankfully, everyone stops being so grumpy and quick-to-anger as soon as the rain stops.

Great to use in the classroom for cause and effect lessons. I used it in a David Shannon author study and the kids loved it! ( )

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0439050219, Hardcover)

"On Saturday morning, the rain came down. It made the chickens squawk." But that's only the beginning. Before the sun comes out again, an entire neighborhood is in a crabby uproar. The owner of the beauty parlor squabbles with the barber, who argues with the painter, who has just accidentally bonked the barber in the head with his paint can. Then the baker unintentionally pokes the pizza man in the nose with his umbrella, and they start quarreling. Soon, "the whole block was honking, yelling, bickering, and barking." There's no end in sight... until the rain stops, the sun comes out, the air smells fresh and sweet, and a rainbow appears. Before they know it, the bickerers are helping each other clean up the mess caused by the ruckus, and everyone's smiling again.

David Shannon, Caldecott Honor artist of No, David!, brings his own brand of sunshine to readers. His rollicking text and bright, witty caricatures of grumpy neighbors and animals will put a smile on every reader's face, rain or shine. Surprising angles (we see the painter's paint-spattered bottom from below as he descends his ladder) may even make gloomy readers laugh out loud! This book is perfect for brightening a dreary gray day. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
