This novel certainly reflects a classic view of the era now half a century ago. Drugs, girls and food are all main ingredients and the wording comes from that hippy era as well. So, it’s dated although the story is light enough not to rely on any earnestness to be brought down by its style. On the other hand I found the plot and characterisation too facile – it was the sort of book that I could easily have stopped reading half way through had left it on a train. The hero is too heroic, the villains too dastardly, the ending too clichéd – nothing much to get the reader thinking. ( )
