... FH envisaged the first three as one big book. You're doing the author a disservice by refusing to read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune and not seeing the full picture he intended you to see.

Out of the silent ... Children of Dune? Children of Dune? I (finally) finished the third Dune book, Children of Dune, and now I'm taking a much needed Frank-Herbert-break to read an ARC of Jordan Dane's No One Heard Her Scream. I'm not sure why, but Children of Dune just really seemed to take everything out of me. "I can only say that the ways of God are mysterious."

''Aren't you going to interpret my dream?" ... morning. I devoted the afternoon to some non-fiction fun, and now since me ER book still didn't arrive, I get to start Children of Dune :D ... Collector's Edition, the US Extended Edition, and a German 5-disc edition with a plaster sandworm. Plus the mini-series and Children of Dune.
I also have quite a collection of books. I don't think Dune is Herbert's best work, but the universe is one of sf's best fictional creations. Anyway, ... Lynch's Dune was a spectacular failure. Or is that a failed spectacle? Both, perhaps. The mini-series was just dull. The Children of Dune mini-series was better, however.

The third time I read Dune, I went straight on to read Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor of Dune, all in a row. I thought God Emperor was pretty amazing. I mean, there might have been some clunky writing, and too ... ... for it now that school's started up again. I've been meaning to read We forever, and I also like the idea of discussing Children of Men together with the movie.
There was a group discussion of The Giver in the Read YA Lit group a while back, if ... ... out endless prequels and sequels, long after they had anything to say. Why didn't Frank Herbert end the Dune saga with Children of Dune? The subsequent 900 novels by him and his son are just pointless.
