His representation of Italy seemed reasonable (no Disneyland Under the Tuscan Sun crap).
But I really didn't care. I like a good meaty art story that teaches me something (which I think was part of the appeal of The Da Vinci Code ... ... in English, because they're great. Also good for anyone who is interested in REAL Italian culture (vs. that silly fantasy Under the Tuscan Sun crap).

First off this is *nothing* like the movie. I think I gained 5lbs while reading it, lots of descriptions of foods. The prose is lovely, but I found I had to take breaks and even started another book (which I never do). Found some great deals today:

I've spent quite a bit of time in Tuscany, and my husband is Italian, and all I have to say is that Under the Tuscan Sun is *definitely* fiction. Personally, I'd classify it as fantasy. (I know the author presents it as biography, but she is delusional). The Schedule calls for work to begin the following Monday.
Under the Tuscan Sun I'm in the beautiful Tuscan countryside with Frances Mayes in Under the Tuscan Sun. Even if the book wasn't fictional the movie was. ;-) "Two's Company," she said, swaying Under the Tuscan Sun. "You should have stayed here. I knew there would be Trouble in Transylvania more than had by all the Troubled Lovers in History. I sighed, and decided to enjoy this last Twilight in Italy.

The Art of War by Sun Tzu #89, Cheryl - I found that Under the Tuscan Sun just got to be too much after a while. I liked the subject matter but, the writing style eventually defeated me. I just skimmed the last fifty pages or so. I've started reading Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. I'm not too far into it, but so far I'm kinda iffy about it. The subject matter is interesting, but I'm not too fond of how she uses short, choppy sentences. ... bought a couple of jars of Emeril's Puttanesca sauce. I'll be opening one tonight. :o)

I know what you mean, but -- chances are I'm never gonna make it to Provence, or Tuscany either (Under the Tuscan Sun), so the best I can do is evesdrop on other folks' experiences there. It's better than reading a dry travel book...
Re: blogs, etc., I do agree that a lot of folks ... ... me a handful of what she thinks of as junk fiction. I've gotten some Nora Roberts this way and my husband really enjoyed Under the Tuscan Sun from this same source.
