This is a great start to a fancinating series set in China. Margaret Campbell adds a CSI feel against the background of modern China as she struggles to help solve a murder. Her culture shock and relationship with her Chinese police partner are interesting and well developed. ( )

J'ai lu ce livre dans l'avion en revenant de Pekin. L'auteur a fait le même circuit que nous : Pekin et Da Tong. ( )

Lots of great background on post-Mao Beijing. The start of a series featuring Li Yan (Chinese police detective) and Margaret Campbell (American forensic pathologist) and the fireworks between them. Characters to care about and twists and turns galore. I'll definitely read more of these. ( )

The story of an American woman who over the course of five days arrives in China, falls in love, helps solve a murder and discovers a potentially catastrophic impending global pandemic. While the events seem at times a bit outlandish, the premise is all too plausible given the nature of corporate greed. The characters are sympathetic and well drawn, combined with an sense of China that is fascinating, sad, frightening, yet exciting and vivid. ( )

Margaret Campbell, a Chicago forensic pathologist, has been invited by the Chinese government to teach at the Beijing police university. She has accepted the six-week assignment with misgivings but is desperate to escape a troubled life in America. Arriving in Beijing, she checks "nothing to declare" on the health declaration they gave her on the plane---nothing, that is, "except a broken heart and a wasted life, neither of which was contagious." She gets off to a bad start when her car knocks senior detective Li Yan off his bicycle. In a furious clash, he dresses her down in perfect English. But Li soon finds himself reintroduced to Margaret by his superiors when the newly promoted detective’s first case requires Margaret’s special expertise to identify a horribly burned corpse. Thrown together to track down the killer, Margaret and Li must bury their personal and cultural differences when they uncover a conspiracy that threatens not only their lives, but the lives of millions.
