Barry Lyndon, un joven irlandés ambicioso y sin escrúpulos, se ve obligado a emigrar a causa de un duelo. Lleva a partir de entonces una vida errante y llena de aventuras. Sin embargo, su sueño es alcanzar una elevada posición social. Y lo hace realidad al contraer un provechoso matrimonio, gracias al cual entra a formar parte de la nobleza inglesa del siglo XVIII.

L'ascesa e la rovina dell'ambizioso avventuriero Redmond Barry (O'Neal) in un Settecento illustrato come nei quadri di Watteau, Hogarthy Gainsborough, ed evocato dalle musiche di Bach, Mozart, Händel. Ma dietro il ritratto di un eroe ambiguo c'è la descrizione di una società violenta, classista, che nasconde profonde miserie con la maschera dell'eleganza e del perbenismo. Basato su un romanzo di William M. Thackeray (sceneggiato da Kubrick), fu quasi un disastro al botteghino: dietro l'eccelso splendore formale (straordinari i suoi lenti zoom all'indietro che a partire da un particolare svelano il panorama o la scenografia che lo circonda) non fu apprezzato il pessimismo diffuso sulle possibilità dell'uomo di conquistare un reale progresso. Ogni scena è stata girata con luce naturale, compresi gli interni rischiarati solo da candele e lumi a olio: per farlo, Kubrick ha adattato alla macchina da presa un obiettivo creato dalla Zeiss per le foto scattate dai satelliti Nasa. Oscar fotografia (John Alcott), per l'adattamento musicale (Leonard Rosenman), per la scenografia e l'arredamento (Ken Adam, Roy Walker e Vernon Dixon), per i costumi (Ulla-Britt Soderlund e Milena Canonero).
