Some children may be able to relate to this story, however, several of them are probably just now getting new pets and they are joyous and bountiful. The cat in this story is like that in the beginning, but she turns into an old cat that just liked to lay around all day. The children will have to realize that their pet will get older one day too, so it may teach them a lesson to use their time wisely with their pet.
