None. i licked this book very much, i would recomend it to all my freinds. ( )Weird!!! I did this book a grave disservice by attempting to read it during the fall semester. This is the type of book that deserves to be read without distraction. Unfortunately, I had to keep putting it down to grade papers and read book club books, so I kept losing the narrative thread. John Dufresne writes beautifully and his book about creative writing, The Lie That Tells a Truth, is one of the best there is. His characters are quirky and real; his writing reflects life as it is truly lived--all the humor, pain, and joy from which daily existence is created. However, having said that, it was at times a little too real with too much description of the minutiae of that same daily existence. I enjoyed the main character, Laf. While flawed and at times careless with the emotions of those who love him, he is a very likable character who offers no apologies. A man is dealing not only with his girlfriend's cancer, but her bizarre and felonious family. I expected it to be compelling and moving, not a boring and trite read. My first disappointment from Dufresne.
Rarely have I laughed so often while reading a book or, coming to the end, cried so hard. Love Warps the Mind a Little is a masterpiece of the genre that writers call the "funny-sad novel," where humor both defies and gives shape to grief. It is rich entertainment, sheer lunacy, moonshine for the wounded heart.
Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0452278988, Paperback)Lafayette Proulx is affectionately called Laf by his friends, and with good reason. As the likeable narrator of John Dufresne's terrific new book Love Warps the Mind a Little, Laf has an eye for the comic elements that can be found in the everyday events of life, and an armchair philosopher's sense of detached bemusement. Laf quits his day job and decides to pursue his dream of writing fiction, a move precipitated by the breakup of his marriage and followed by a torrent of rejection slips. He moves in with his hesitant girlfriend Judi, and for a time, the story sets into a domestic story of befuddled affection and incidental affairs. Suddenly, Judi is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and from here on out, Love Warps the Mind a Little becomes a stunning love story, sweetly moving in its description of love amid tragic circumstances. Its honesty and insight are wonderful and the comic elements are never lost. The highly acclaimed author of Louisiana Power & Light has met the high expectations of his critics and readers alike in this wonderful novel.(retrieved from Amazon Thu, 14 Feb 2013 13:50:43 -0500) A 40-year-old man who always wanted to be a writer finally takes the plunge.
