Nije bilo puno veselja u razmišljanju o budućnosti: nije ih čekalo ništa osim smrti i razaranja. Nije bilo niti puno veselja u razmišljanju o prošlosti: ono što su doživjeli bila je noćna mora koju bi bilo najbolje zaboraviti. Stoga su u kratkim trenucima zatišja radije zurili prema dalekoj reci, srebrnoj Volgi, gde su rasplesane zrake jesenjeg sunca stvarale sjajeće prstenove u vodi. I na kratko bi vreme bili hipnotisani i poverovali da sadašnjost može potrajati zauvek, te da prošlost može biti zaboravljena, a budućnost izbjegnuta
