Ha ha, my copy of Ender's Game also has tattered edges!
My other most read scifi book is Prelude to Foundation which is my favorite Asimov story.
I also hope Ender's Game will be a movie soon! However, I tend to think that the Bean series (beginning with Ender's Shadow) would be a more exciting and action-filled movie in comparison. I'm also looking forward to the anti-gravity special effects in the Battle Room scenes...
... you don't have to read Ender's Shadow in series order - it won't ruin or spoil anything for you. It's told in parallel to Ender's Game but from the viewpoint of another boy at battle school. It's the only other Ender book I've read although my husband likes them all.
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card has been another excellent addition to my reading list from this year. A classic tale of war in space and the young boy who has been selected to command Earth's forces in a battle to the death. This is a fast paced story that deals with the forced maturation ...

Wow, this topic is a bit old, but hey, why not revive it...
I have it on good authority that Ender's Game will be a movie, as soon as Card finishes the screenplay for it. Perhaps he's finished it by now... but yes, it will happen. At least, filming will happen. Fairly soon. Hopefully.

I am reading Enders Game by the wonderful Orson Scott Card. I recently(a year or so ago) took in a lecture from this brilliant man. I would recommend all of you hear this man speak. Skulduggery Pleasant, Ender's Game and the Bartimaeus trilogy?
All very good books with no romance.
I always recommend Ender's Game first, but I do not recommend the sequels. Since you asked for historical as well, I think To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the best books ever written.
I hope you find something!

#61. Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a classic and I don't think you can ever go wrong with that
Ender's Game . I didn't get very far into that one, as it seemed to be more of a young adult's book. Also Pirate Freedom by Gene Wolfe. Although I'm a fan of Wolfe, I got lost in this one and was too bored to keep finding my way.

Hi, Lemonwalrus!
I am also planning to read Ender's Game on recommendation from my daughter -- I hope in March. And I want to read both The Voyage of the Beagle and On the Origin of Species this year, too. So I can't wait to read your reviews.
I hope your bio exam went ok and good luck ...

I just recently mooched a copy of The Game and read it for the first time. One thing to consider is that it is a novella rather than a full-length novel and the character development is correspondingly limited. The story is an episode rather than a fully developed world. I found it on a par with ...

Hi stephxsu,
I have yet to meet a person that has read Ender's Game and didn't enjoy it, so I am pretty sure that I will enjoy it a lot. I tend to enjoy classics and other widely popular books, as you can probably already tell.

Lots of good recommendations. I second #20 with Ender's Game I used to tell parents at the bookstore that it was like reading a video game. At that age they really don't care about anything except the battle room scenes, but that still makes it an enjoyable read.

Update on Ender's Game : we started reading in Year 11 ESL today, and the kids seemed to enjoy it - they laughed & winced in all the right places, so that was good. Sharing with them It's even better than I remember it!

Miss-Owl, Ender's Game is one of the best sci-fi novels I've ever read. I haven't gotten around to re-reading it for years (but I think I might classify it as a Desert Island Novel), but I still get moved just thinking about it. Truly great sci-fi makes you *think*, and this one did that.

Just re-read Enders Game last night which I haven't read since I was a kid. I loved it just as much the second time, I may go for the full series today!

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
I don't know if I can pick just one. Ender's Game is sort of like The Hobbit for me, it may not be the best in the series, but because I read it first out all his works it still speaks to me in ways the other books can't. If I take that out of the equation I'd have to go with Pastwatch

Also completed Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, and I much preferred it to Stardust. It's a level above Ender's Game , which was a Secret Santa gift to me and I did enjoy, but not quite deep fantasy. On to the next book I can grab on the shelf.
I second the negative on Ender's Game . By all accounts, it's a book best enjoyed in your early teens.
My daughter suggested that I nominate another book Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, and I just read a review of it elsewhere that was really good. Plus, apparently there will be a movie of it in 2011.

Sorry to hear you did not care for Ender's Game . Perhaps you will like Harry Potter better.
Finished Ender's Game . Really, really didn't like it at all, for a variety of reasons.
Hope that the first Potter book is better.
Finished Ender's Game yesterday. I really didn't like it very much (see review). I'm looking forward to comparing what Rowling did with what is (in O.S. Card's view) very much the same plot idea. Somehow I think hers will be better.

I was going to point out that Ender's Game is a required read here in Texas in response to post #39, but I figured it was only that way for districts around me. Certain times of the year you can't go into a B&N without tripping over a stack of the book.
Let me say at the outset that I liked all of the original 4 Ender's Game books, and much of Card's earlier work, long before his views on social issues became well-publicized. I've been distracted lately by a class I'm taking on reader's advisory. I'm currently reading Ender's Game as my science fiction book. I still have to read Ice Station and The Viscount Who Loved Me before class starts on the 24th.

Finally, another book to add! I've been reading several books simultaneously, though. If you were a fan of Ender's Game , this is a great companion novel, or it can stand on its own.

I'd say Ender's Game , because it is one of my all-time favorites, but I have to warn you that it will just add to your TBR pile, since it's the first in a series, and once you read the first one, you'll definitely want to read the rest straightaway...

I would advise against Ender's Game , and 1984. I read both of these in highschool and again in college. 1984 scared the shit out of me, and I'm not sure a sixth grader would really understand the book. I remember reading Martian Chronicles in middle school and being bored out of my mind.

Once a decade or so, a genre title breaks out into best-sellerdom, and sells in the millions: Dune in the 60s, Ender's Game in the 70s, Neuromancer in the 80s... Cryptonomicon, perhaps, for the 90s?
But the genre chugs along even in years without runaway hits.
