It’s my opinion that Mary Ann Hoberman originally intended to write this book with the clear intention of talking about different types of families to create acceptance among children, so that she could explain that no two families were alike. However, I feel that she should have stuck with that idea consistently through the story, since there is just too many things going on it will most likely have a hard time keeping a child’s interest. Or if it is able to keep a child’s interest her original intent will get lost in all the rest of what she is doing. As far as the art goes, I am very pleased to see it as the greatest part (my own opinion, what held my attention to stick with the book and what made the storyline better for me as a reader). Without the illustrations done in fluorescent hues by Marc Boutavant, I otherwise might have stopped reading this story. But, it was helpful to me to see the expressions on the children’s faces as the characters are trying to find what a family is. In this way Hoberman and Boutavant worked well together to get the overall message across and not get lost in Hoberman’s at time excessive wordiness. I gave it four stars because of the great illustrations!! ( )no reviews | add a review
