... ladies like the smell of young men's toes, so it is a sovereign remedy against the vapors. This one reminded me of A Modest Proposal: Directions to the Nurse--If you happen to let the child fall, and lame it, be sure never confess it; and if it dies, all is safe.

#9 A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift it's on the 1001 Books list, even though it was only 13 pages long. Very funny! I completely agree with Mr Swift. It is an excellent proposal to end a growing problem in the world =)

#2 - Sorry for mentioning Wild Swans again. I must have missed your entry. Also I forgot to mention A Modest Proposal. It would be applicable since it is a long essay.

So K, I don't suppose you've ever read A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift..... ;)

... English unit on irony. And how even in an honors class, in a unit on irony, my fellow students were absolutely REPULSED by A Modest Proposal. We were supposed to be reading it quietly to ourselves, and I distinctly remember being the only one giggling under my breath.

A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift

... seriously). This means that Anton Chekhov is not in, surely a giant in literature. On the other hand, Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal (which I think runs to about 5 pages or so of text) and some classic Poe stories are in. And where the hell are the Iliad and the Odyssey? How many ...

>42 Actually, when we read it in school, almost all of the class was horribly offended by A Modest Proposal. They simply couldn't figure out that it was SATIRE. They did, in fact, think that Swift was advocating eating Irish children. I, on the other hand, thought the entire thing was bloody ...

... at a crazy treatment option. To bring another book in it - how many people are offended that Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal makes indirect light of the horrible starving multitudes in Ireland during the potato famine? As far as I am concerned, the Onion piece I posted is e ...

... of books (some short, some easy reads, some both) that I finished in 1-3 days of normal reading time: Aesop's Fables A Modest Proposal (shortest "novel" in the 1001 book I think) Candide Castle Rackrent (short, but I didn't like it much) The Nose (Short Story) The Fall of the Ho ...

A Modest Proposal is great, and should not be missed. I noticed these, along with the Poe stories, and thought that perhaps in addition to being short stories, they were also titles of books that contained additional works. It seems odd to be able to read a short story and count it as a whole ...

... (short, but not pleasant, not that that means I think it's not worth reading!) There are a few by Jonathan Swift, e.g. A Modest Proposal and Tale of a tub which I think are relatively short as well, but the unread caveat applies for those as well!

... Last night she woke me up by blasting Britney Spears' Greatest Hits. Then she ate a baby and didn't even CONSULT A Modest Proposal. Double-lock your doors.

#82 A Modest Proposal it ain't. :-)

... - it would become useless. Still boekerij can consider himself welcome in the company of Jonathan Swift whose A Modest Proposal also resulted in squalls of protest and the modern TV satirist Chris Morris who was treated similarly for his Brass Eye programmes.

princemuchao, I think many don't see A Modest Proposal as funny becuase it is taught in school, which immediately drains all humor and wit out of any text. I can still see my ancient English teacher in her monotonous voice saying "this is an example of satire, now let me lecture on the ...

... Discordia, if you like religion with your humor. I wonder how many people have actually read Jonathan Swift's work? A Modest Proposal is probably the funniest thing ever written in the English language... is it unknown if no one reads it because it is incorrectly assumed to be ancient ...
