Classic Clancy. He presents a future world in a frighteningly plausible manner; a restless Japan,an India emerging from the third world to become one of the 21st century's superpowers, and a United States that has comfortably assumed its own superpower. Published 1994, the story depicts plausible series of events culminating in a tragedy that predicts a shadow of actual current events. As always, Clancy describes in detail the operations of global finance as well as military operations. The ending is cliff hanger; the reader must go on to the next book in the series. ( )

Liked the book, but it is too long ago to write a proper review. Will add one after re-reading.

One of Clancy's best books, I think. Although the basic premise (Japanese business takes over government and attacks US) is somewhat unlikely, it's very realistically described and as usual the writing is compulsively page-turning . The various sub-plots are all skilfully brought together and there's always a human face to the scenarios. Also less bad language than you sometimes get with Clancy's books. The finale is a set-up for the next book, Executive Orders. Very prescient in parts about terror tactics. ( )

Book description
"Called out of retirement to serve as the new president's National Security Advisor, Jack Ryan quickly realizes that the problems of peace are fully as complex as those of war. What he cannot realize, however, is just how close the next conflict is. And when one of those new enemies readies a strike not only at America's territory, but at the heart of her economy, it is Ryan who must prepare an untested president to meet the challenge. For there is a debt of honor to be paid--and the price will be terrifyingly high."--Back cover.

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0425147584, Mass Market Paperback)

Razio Yamata is one of Japan's most influential industrialists, and part of a relatively small group of authority who wield tremendous authority in the Pacific Rim's economic powerhouse. He has devised a plan to cripple the American greatness, humble the U.S. military, and elevate Japan to a position of dominance on the world stage. Yamata's motivation lies in his desire to pay off a Debt of Honor to his parents and to the country he feels is responsible for their deaths: America. All he needs is a catalyst to set his plan in motion. When the faulty gas tank on one Tennessee family's car leads to their fiery death, an opportunistic U.S. congressman uses the occasion to rush a new trade law through the system. The law is designed to squeeze Japan economically. Instead, it provides Yamata with the leverage he needs to put his plan into action. As Yamata's plan begins to unfold, it becomes clear to the world that someone is launching a fully integrated operation against the United States. There's only one man to find out who the culprit is: Jack Ryan, the new president's National Security Advisor.
