... but he is pulpy in all the good ways - bold, courageous, chivalrous, and more than a little lucky. The story that began in A Princess of Mars is well worth following through the series, even if this book seems a little disjointed.

... assassins and the rival mad scientist use their own interpanetary ship to kidnap John Carter's great love Dejah Thoris (the Princess of Mars from book one in the series) and whisk her away to the martian moon Thuria. John Carter immediately flies back to Helium to prevent the kidnapping, arrives ...

... and quite a number of his stories are definitely sci fi. See, I don't think of stuff like The Martian Chronicles, A Princess of Mars, An Alien Heat or even Star Wars as 'sci-fi'. But then I don't know what you would call them. This isn't a very reasoned position for me, just a gut ...

... indicated that they like Isaac Asimov, I'd point them towards Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Barsoom" novels, starting with A Princess of Mars. If someone had already read the Sherlock Holmes novels, I'd point them towards J.S. Fletcher. An interesting book about a pair of British ...

It's actually Kerry Conran, not Kevin. And he was attached to A Princess of Mars after Sky Captain. But then he unattached himself, or was dropped, and hasn't been seen since... Oh and yes, Sky Captain was a great film. Audiences didn't get it because it was too close to its inspirations - not ...

... in that light has to be seen as a positive response to a scientific and technological worldview. > 28 Have you ever read A Princess of Mars? Find me the bit of science in that which is "theoretically scientifically possible, or thought to be at the time it was written". Again, most people ...

I remember as a young whippersnapper my father's father had A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and The Warlord of Mars by Burroughs on his bookshelves. Next to these were several Tom Swift books by Victor Appleton. These are the first Sci-Fi I remember. My father and his brother ...

... I don't see in this day and age how a movie like John Carter of Mars can be good. Don't get me wrong, I loved A Princess of Mars. But with focus groups, studio interference, the need to market it toward families/kids so they can sell toys and partner up with McDonald's... train ...

... technical accuracy a problem - I lump The Martian Chronicles (and really, any Ray Bradbury 'sci-fi') in with A Princess of Mars or Star Wars. Bradbury isn't Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke. He is a fantasy writer who named one of his fantasy kingdoms 'Mars'. His writing ...

I think Edgar Rice Burroughs does a great job with this in his Barsoom series, which begins with A Princess of Mars. Dune by Frank Herbert is another example of epic worldbuilding. Michael Moorcock's Elric series has a pretty well fleshed out world, as well. Touchstones seem to ...

... truly literary works stand the test of time, I think of Edgar Rice Burroughs, who produced a whole string of works like Princess of Mars which are still read today :-D

For a long time I had the poster Frank Frazetta did for A Princess of Mars (mmm, good old ERB). Currently I have a Australian Ford Falcon XB, Mel Gibson's car from Mad Max.

godwulf in Science Fiction Fans : More lists (Dec 28, 2006, 10:30am)

Great list! Good to see Matheson's I Am Legend and Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle on it. A Princess of Mars, as well. Off the top of my head, I would probably only add The Survivors a/k/a Space Prison by Tom Godwin.

Hellzon in rollspel.nu : Sweet bananas! (Dec 17, 2006, 6:45pm)
