Data-Wave: management inspiration: be there, play, something else(?)

Had to read this one for a work project. Still worthwhile info. ( )

I like the concepts, though I found the story to be a bit lacking. We've instituted these practices at work and I've got to say that I'm enjoying it. Having fun at work is HUGELY important and this book teaches to that concept. ( )

A condenscending little book that takes you for an idiot. Which is very unfortunate, because the message is important. The ideas could have been presented in 10 minutes on two sheets of paper - but then Lundin wouldn@t have made a fortune. ( )

We are all looking for enjoyment and satisfaction from our work where we spend about 75% of our awake time. This book is a fictional account of a workplace that is a ‘toxic energy dump’ and the motivational management techniques that are put in place to help the workers love the work they do even if they can’t always be doing the work they love. It is based on four lessons: ‘choose your attitude’, ‘play’, ‘make their day’ and ‘be present’. This book was interesting as a quick read with some principles that may be useful in the workplace as long as you can get past its ‘Americanisms.’ ( )

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0786866020, Hardcover)

Here's another management parable that draws its lesson from an unlikely source--this time it's the fun-loving fishmongers at Seattle's Pike Place Market. In Fish! the heroine, Mary Jane Ramirez, recently widowed and mother of two, is asked to engineer a turnaround of her company's troubled operations department, a group that authors Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen describe as a "toxic energy dump." Most reasonable heads would cut their losses and move on. Why bother with this bunch of losers? But the authors don't make it so easy for Mary Jane. Instead, she's left to sort out this mess with the help of head fishmonger Lonnie. Based on a bestselling corporate education video, Fish! aims to help employees find their way to a fun and happy workplace. While some may find the story line and prescriptions--such as "Choose Your Attitude," "Make Their Day," and "Be Present"--downright corny, others will find a good dose of worthwhile motivational management techniques. If you loved Who Moved My Cheese? then you'll find much to like here. And don't worry about Mary Jane and kids. Fish! has a happy ending for everyone. --Harry C. Edwards
