The best stories tend to be from great writers like Tolstoy, Dickens and Chekov the retellings are a hit and miss affair depending on the quality of the writer. Some are great and some seem smarmy. Another critism of the book is similar to that of Book of Virtues in that there are a lot of American history stories which don't have the same significance for Canadians. ( )Bravo! I rarely give 5 stars but this book has surpassed Bennett's other childrens collections. We started reading this book out loud while camping and the kids begged for more each night. The stories are engaging and thoughtful and nicely arranged in their respective chapters. The poetry selections are not too short, not too long and easy enough to read for a poetry novice like myself. no reviews | add a review
