I couldn't get into this book. It had its funny bits, to be sure, but it seems like in my mind all British humour is destined to be compared to Douglas Adams, and this book just seems like a knock-off of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Actually, it seemed like a knockoff of Rob Grant's Colony, which seemed like a darker knockoff of HHGTTG. Maybe it's just that I read this one last instead of first, but it just seemed very tired, like all of the jokes had been made before.
This book is a classic, and I love the TV series (which I discovered before the books), and this book. The book is different from the TV series, and feels more like a summary of the series than anything else, but its an engaging read. http://www.stillhq.com/book/Grant_Nay... Funny good stuff. Great read--finished it in a couple days. Very reminiscent of Hitchhikers--practically derivative. Maybe it's a new genre? I like the TV series but couldn't get into the book. Bought the book, never read it, then moved to the UK and saw the TV show. Realised that I had the book and never bothered to read it. The TV show is one of my favourites. Weird Brits get lost in space…. and holograms and mechanoids and cats….. I finally read the book now and it is really funny! The ending is very strange though. And you probably need an English sense of humour to get a kick out of this. If you like Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Tom Sharp and co., this is for you! Red Dwarf is a very funny tv show, and this book is also pretty amusing. The whole situation Lister finds himself in as the last man alive is a lot easier to follow when someone actually writes it down for you. A definitely entertaining volume, and certainly recommended for fans of Red Dwarf and funny sf stuff. http://notfreesf.blogspot.com/2007/01... I couldn't get into this book.
