Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

This collection of five stories traces the growth of Swedish Inspector Kurt Wallander into a first-rate detective, from rookie cop to young father to middle-aged divorcé, illuminating new facets of a now-canonical character.

In "Wallander's First Case," the twenty-one-year-old patrolman's first homicide case involves his next-door neighbor, seemingly dead by his own hand. Wallander is a young father confronting an unexpected threat on Christmas Eve in "The Man with the Mask." In "The Man on the Beach," he is on the brink of middle age and troubled by a distant wife as he unravels why a lonely man was poisoned. Newly separated in "The Death of the Photographer," he investigates the murder of the local photographer and discovers some well concealed secrets. In "The Pyramid" he is the veteran detective uncovering connections between a downed plane and the assassination of two elderly sisters. Over the course of these five stories, Wallander comes into his own as a murder detective, defined by his simultaneously methodical and instinctive work, even as he finds himself increasingly haunted from witnessing the worst aspects of an atomized society.

Written from the unique perspective of an author looking back upon his own creation to discover his origins, these mysteries are vintage Mankell and essential reading for all Wallander fans. The Pyramid is a wonderful display of Mankell's virtuosic powers as an acknowledged master of the police procedural.… (more)

The Pyramid is a collection of five short stories featuring Kurt Wallander, Mankell's signature detective inspector. The stories are set at different points in Wallander's career, from his rookie year to the period just before the events of Faceless Killers, the first novel in the Wallander series. They provide insights into Wallander's development as a detective and his personal life, including his relationships with his father, daughter, and colleagues. Mankell wrote The Pyramid after completing the Wallander series. ( )

Interesting, although his 'what is the world coming to' attitude makes me uneasy at times.

Prequel short stories showing Wallander as short tempered when he was young. The last story nicely lead into the first novel, faceless killers. His dad going to Egypt and a lot of him hanging around the apartment kind of dragged the stories down to a 3.5, but still love his Swedish weather descriptions. These were filler. Mankell needs the broader novel canvas. Or maybe that is what I am used to. ( )

Ranging from the 60's to the opening of the first real Wallander novel, this collection introduces Wallander's connections to many of the folks he meets in the other books -- and it gives a good sense of how he grows as an investigator. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
To Rolf Lassgård
with great warmth, gratitude,
and not a little admiration.
He has told me so much
about about Wallander that I myself
did not know.
First words
In the beginning, everything was just a fog.
Wallander checked his watch. It was a quarter to five.
On the afternoon of Sunday, 26 April 1987, Detective Chief Inspector Kurt Wallander sat in his office in the Ystad police station, absent-mindedly clipping some hair from one of his nostrils.
Every year, in early spring, he had a recurring dream. That he could fly.
The aeroplane flew in over Sweden at a low altitude just west of Mossby Beach.
Quotations
A veiled woman walked past. Scheherazade, Wallander thought. She could have helped me. Or Aladdin. I could have used someone in that league. The Pyramid, p. 320
