The audio versions of Lois McMaster Bujold's books are good. I've only heard one (The Warrior's Apprentice ) but I liked it.
I also recommend Toby Hadoke's Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf which I ordered on CD from Amazon.co.uk. Not sure if it's available anywhere for download. It's not SF ...
... had to read Moby Dick, which has an entire chapter about the "whiteness of the whale," should appreciate this.
I liked The Warrior's Apprentice , listed above as Young Miles, scene where he collapses from exhaustion and the pilot jokes that the creme de menthe finally wore off. Elena says ...
... Miles Vorkosigan series has its romantic and sexual moments, including interspecies sex. A good place to start is The Warrior's Apprentice . Miles' epic and at times hilarious romance with Ekaterin begins in Komarr.

46. The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold (sci fi) ***1/2
This is the third book in the series, the first featuring the main character of Miles. This was actually a reread for me which is something I normally don't do. Another group that I'm in is reading the series in order, ...
I third Bujold, heartily! I'd skip Ethan of Athos, though, and start either with Cordelia's Honor or The Warrior's Apprentice (the second tends to grab people more, but I'm a complete-and-in-order sort of reader, thus the other rec).
I too love a great YA dystopia (and YA in general). A ...
I will second Bujold. Ethan of Athos or Warrior's Apprentice is a good start. The latter may only be available as Young Miles.
If you like dystopia's, perhaps try 1984 by Orwell or The Giver by Lowry.
Another good, often overlooked book is Expendable by Gardner, but that may be ...

57. The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. Recommended by Roni ncats a while back.
I enjoyed this, although I wasn't sure at first. I generally don't like books about teenagers and this seemed to be going that route but it pretty quickly settled down into a good SF story, if a ...
Bujold's Vorkosigan books. Very re-readable.
I'm not a fan of Card's Ender series (save for Ender's Game) - the newest in particular I thought was just terrible - but I did like his Ender's Shadow series well enough. Don't know that I'd bother to re-read them, but I liked them while I was ...
32. Warrior's Apprentice (TBR List)
A very fun romp of a space opera! Good pacing, plot, and characters, and lots of derring-do!

Warrior's Apprentice works for me in place of Vorkosigan series. I read it first as well, and was propelled at light speed toward the rest of the series. :o)
Aerrin, I'm the Barrayar vote, and I'm amenable to your suggestions. I started with Warrior's Apprentice myself, and would probably recommend that first to teen boys, but to girls and women would probably go with Barrayar. (Being a mature woman when reading WA certainly didn't mute its appeal ...
... Bujold's Vorkosigan series, although starting in different places - one for A Civil Campaign, one for Barrayar, two for Warrior's Apprentice , and one for 'The Vorkosigan Series'.

I reserve the right to add more later if I think of them! But these are certainly books I've hooked people with before. A part of me wants to also make this list very YA heavy - I ...

I would consider some of Bujold's science fiction to be humorous, specifically The Warrior's Apprentice and A Civil Campaign.

... blahs? Looking at your library, have you ever read any Steven Brust (try Jhereg) or Lois McMaster Bujold (go for Warrior's Apprentice for science fiction or The Curse of Chalion for fantasy). Sometimes it just takes some excellent books to break out. Or go back for a reread of a ...

... is more a YA called The Spirit Ring. Bujold's SF is not hard SF but more character-driven like her fantasies. Start with The Warrior's Apprentice to get a taste. Then you can back up two books to get Miles' parents' story or just head straight on to get Miles' adventures and eventual maturity- ...
... really don't do her justice. Rather than starting with her Hugo winners, I'd recommend starting with Barrayar or The Warrior's Apprentice , as the later books definitely build on these. Her fantasy, starting with The Curse of Chalion is excellent as well. Have you already read hers? ...
I've been getting approving indicators from those who have read the fourth book to the end, Tad. Bujold was trying to do something different, and I'm trying to be open to whatever it turns out to be. And as it is, it certainly holds its own with a multitude of quest stories out there. But we tend ...
In response to #5 - I very much agree with the Warrior's Apprentice vote, although I wouldn't call Bujold hard sci-fi at all. It's very clearly sci fi - space ships, space stations, mercenary fleets, an interesting verse of worlds, and all! - but it's also very concretely character-driven, ...
I had plans to gift a friend with the first several Lois McMaster Bujold Vorkosigan books, but then he went and bought them on his own!
So I guess I'll skip to Vor Game and Cetaganda, and he'll just be further along!
... Bujold's Curse of Chalion series (fantasy)? (author touchstone probably not working.) If he likes hard SF, try him with The Warrior's Apprentice by Bujold or one of the later ones in the series, if he's already read that.
... on the same world but in a completely different geographical area. Looking at our books in common, I suspect you would like Bujold 's science fiction, too. Maybe start with The Warrior's Apprentice. Bujold's next book out is going to be in this story line. Also, although there is magic, I think ...
My first book was The Warrior's Apprentice (3rd in the timeline), encountered purely by accident, and it was so different from what I expected given the title and the cover (this was the notorious "battle nightie" cover) that I was immediately entranced. I agree Shards of Honor would be a good ...

Barrayar is the second (in terms of story chronology) of the author's Miles Vorkosigan series, and follows on immediately from Shards of Honour, reviewed in this blog on 1 August. Cordelia is now married to Lord Aral Vorkosigan and pregnant with their first child (Miles – who finally makes an ...

... I found most of Lois McMaster Bujold's works there. Maybe the first Miles Vorkosigan book fits YA because he was 18 in The Warrior's Apprentice , but certainly none of the later books belong in YA, and neither do her other non-Miles books. Robert Jordan shows up in YA, and so does Che ...
