#83 One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Translated from the Russian by H.T. Willets. This book is an account of one day (out of an 8-year term) in Ivan’s life, spent under the watchful eyes of his warders in a Stalinist work ...

I'm incarcerated in a Stalinist work camp in Siberia during a brutally cold day with Shukov and Alexander Solzhenitsyn , in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

#16 I agree. Ivan Denisovich or Half of a Yellow Sun.
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Cancer Ward, both by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, as well as The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. Comments to follow after I finish this first batch of titles nudged...
Depends what you feel like, I think - overall I'd nudge Ivan Denisovich (short, sparing and very, very thought-provoking), but if you're in the mood for a good story, Half of a Yellow Sun.
Ivan Denisovich is a terrific short book. The Skvorecky you have I would actually denudge because it is not by any stretch one of his best books. I know his writing well, and this book would discourage you from reading others. So, skip this one, and get someone to give you a copy of Cowards, ...
Cancer Ward and A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich are both good but the latter is shorter and probably best to tackle first if you've not read Solzhenitsyn before. The Reader by Bernard Schlink is an unusual book well worth a read about a young boy's affair with an older woman involved in N ...
