This was a great Russia folktale, with the Russian equivalent of King Arthur, Prince Vladimir. Vassilisa outsmarts the prince and wins her husband's freedom from the dungeons. I particularly liked the presence of a strong female main character. I would use this during either a study of folklore or with a study of Russian history.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0152932402, Hardcover)

Based on an authentic Russian folk ballad, this action-adventure story pits a clever and courageous woman against Prince Vladimir of Russia. “The rich, layered watercolors reflect the story’s origins; costumes are striking and the decorative patternings throughout give effective contrast.”-Booklist
