Cute youth book about a cat who wants to do more in the protecting-humans area, by going to space. I could have done with a bit more facial expression (and ears / whiskers / eyes etc) changes in the pages, but it was an amusing read. ( )

Binky is a space cat, or so he thinks. He is actually a normal house cat who has never set foot out of his family's "space station". Which is really their house. He is on a mission! That mission is to blast off into space (he really wants to go outside), explore the strange unknown territory (their backyard) and battle ,what he thinks is, aliens (they are really flies which his humans call bugs). One day, Binky finally receives his official "Space Cat" qualification letter in the mail which certifies him as an official member of F.U.R.S.T - Felines of the Universe Ready for Space Travel- and begins what he thinks is his moral duty.Which is to protect his humans from the aliens (bugs). To protect them from these unstoppable invaders, Binky gets to work building a rocket ship and prepares he and his humans for take off into the atmosphere. He completes his mission of building the rocket and is ready to take off but just as he was ready to leave he realizes he for got something very important.....his humans! So he does what any good house cat, I mean space cat, would do. He ditches his mission and comes back to save his humans from the evil invaders! Throughout this book, the author uses a lot of onomatopoeia to describe the actions taking place through the story. When students read this book , they are learning how to incorporate an onomatopoeia into their writing, and also they are learning how to develop a voice when it comes to writing. I would recommend this book to anyone because it truly is an adorable story about a "space cat" and his humans! ( )

Binky the Space Cat is a humorous story depicting a delusional Cat that thinks he is saving his owners from space aliens. One day Binky gets a paper saying that he is qualified to become a space cat. In doing so, he tries to protect his owners from aliens which coincidentally looks like ordinary house flies. Binky decides to build a rocket ship in order to go to outer space, which coincidentally looks just like the outdoors, in order to protect his owners outside the house. Eventually he does build a rocket but decides to opt out of riding it for fear of leaving his owners behind. Binky soon discovers that he needs to build a bigger rocket next time. I enjoyed this book because of how humorous the panels were. Binky is a cat filled with the delusional grandeur of being an exceptional guardian protector. This is a good book because it focuses on a lesser known point of view. To humans the outside world might seem like normal but to a house cat, the outdoors might as well be called outer space. A good activity should take advantage of this unique perspective. Kids can imagine themselves as their pet, if they have one at home, or a small animal and write or draw about what it would be like to venture in the outside world and share with their class. ( )

Wait, didn't I just read this? Oh, no, it was [bc:The Secret Life of Walter Kitty|122279|The Secret Life of Walter Kitty|Barbara Jean Hicks|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1171838814s/122279.jpg|117721]. Oh, and then there was [bc:When Cats Dream|450159|When Cats Dream (Orchard Paperbacks)|Dav Pilkey|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1174875790s/450159.jpg|438802], too. Hmmm. That's ok - they're all wonderful fun. This one is the size of a chapter book and designed a bit more like a graphic novel, so it might appeal more to kids who are reading on their own. The story develops oddly - we don't get introduced to Binky until after we've seen him do stuff, that kind of thing - but it's nbd, just a little different. I did laugh out loud several times in the 10 minutes it took to read this. ( )

Binky is convinced he is a space cat. He is always saving his humans from bugs (aliens) and he has always dreamed of going into outer space. He decides it's time to build a rocket ship! Right before take off he realizes that he can't leave without him humans. No one will protect them from the aliens. He decides if he makes another rocket ship it has to be bigger so he can take his humans with him. ( )
