    Paranormalcy by Kiersten White (snazz)
    snazz: Paranormalcy is another YA paranormal series with a snarky and completely loveable main character as well as a swoon-worthy romance. Plus the plot is similar in that it deals with an organization controlling paranormals.

4... 4.5 stars, definitely.
Okay, so I loved this book… even though it had a total ‘Harry Potter’ feel to it. Only exception was that the main character, Sophie Mercer, always knew she was a witch. She lived in the real world up until she tried to make a friend with a classmate by casting a love spell for her. The love spell went awry and because she made her powers known, she was shipped off to ‘Hex Hall’-Boarding School for the Gifted.
Not only did this book have very likable characters, an intriguing storyline, but it was hilarious. There were so many quotes I could have added as favorites; however, I stopped at 3…maybe 4. Lol
And the incident with Archer and Sophie in the cellar… Ahhhh! That had my mouth gaping. Even though I should have seen that one coming, it still threw me for a loop.
So now I must decide whether to jump right into Demonglass or wait… Decisions decisions. :)

This is the first book in the Hex Hall trilogy. It was a cute YA paranormal read. There isn’t a lot special here but the book was generally well written and well done. I especially enjoyed Sophie’s quirky sense of humor.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was very well done. Sophie sounds exactly like I would imagine her to. The narrator did an excellent job of distinguishing between character voices.

Sophie Mercer is a witch and when a love spell she does for a friend goes horribly wrong, her dad decides her punishment will be to transfer her to Hex Hall. Hex Hall is a school of magical deliquents, those students of non-human nature who just can’t seem to control their powers. While there Sophie gets involved in a mystery where other Dark Witches are being attacked. If Sophie can’t figure out what’s going on, and quickly, then she might be the next witch attacked.

This is a cute young adult read about a school full of witches, faeries, vampires and werewolves. It was a fun quick read and the characters were engaging. There was a good mystery to be solved, although it was pretty predictable.

Sophie kind of makes the story. She has an absolutely quirky and cutting sense of humor that gets her into trouble a lot. Her roommate, a vampire addicted to hot pink, adds even more fun to the mix.

This is a pretty typical YA paranormal read. Sophie has to deal with the “mean girl” group, the only twist being that these mean girls want her to join their coven. Sophie also ends up falling for the hottest guy in school, the totally untouchable Archer Cross. Sophie and Archer had pretty good chemistry together and it was cute to watch them get to know each other.

The vamps, weres, and witches are pretty typical...there’s nothing all that special about them in this world. The world-building in general isn’t all that great. This book is driven more by the mystery behind all of the witches being attacked. Much of the book is also dedicated to Sophie getting settled in her new school and learning more about being a witch.

Overall a fun and quick paranormal YA read. While there wasn’t a ton that was super creative here, it was still and cute and fun read. This is just a light book to read quickly. The characters are engaging and well done and there is a good mystery here to be solved. I will probably check out the second book in the series, mainly because Sophie is just so much fun and so quirky. Recommended to fans of YA paranormal books. ( )

I was totally pessimistic about this book the first time I was its cover. The first thing that came to my mind was that this book would be another cheesy schoolgirl lovelife. Obviously I had been wrong.

Hex Hall told us about seventeen-year-old Sophie Mercer, who was born as a witch, and struggling to settled with her life.
Protecting her image as a normal human, she and her human mother had moved out every times Sophie blew up her cover. And that happened a lot. When her father told her to attended Hex Hall- a school specially build for a Prodigium or paranormal kids-Sophie could finally opened up as a witch and enjoyed a normal school life. But that was until an attempted murder began at her school. And that Sophie’s roomies and her only best friend, Jenna, was accused because she was a vampire.

Throughout the book, Sophie’s characteristic and personality totally made me laugh. She was funny, witty, and downward sarcastic. I love how she would comment some things silently and said something totally different.
And I also like it how Rachel Hawkins could make the usual cliche-you know, hot guy ditch te hot girl and go for the ordinary thing and all that-fun and not really all that cheesy.
Archer Cross, Sophie’s love interest and our main hero, was a bit bland for me and not too undeveloped. Like he was there solely to complement Sophie.

Another character I really love was Elodie, Sophie’s rival on love, and you know who, the hot girl. I really love her snotty and bratty attitude, being the drama queen and acting all high and mighty. Some people would hate it, but I love it when the character was distinguishable from the others, even when it was because her negative attitudes. That means-for me personally-that she had a strong traits.

The story plot wasn’t too great, and not really epic unique. It had been done before, and the storyline was predictable. But Rachel Hawkins great characters totally add up the fun and made up to that.

Overall, I think this book has the best character I’ve ever read-which is Sophie-but not that epic storyline. For you who love fantasy and would love some light reading, I totally recommend this book. ( )

Epigraph
My mother says I must not pass

Too near the glass;

She is afraid that I will see

A little witch that looks like me;

With a red mouth to whisper low,

The very thing I should not know.

Book description
When Sophie Mercer turned thirteen, she discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-Gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hecate Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward prodigium, a.k.a. witches, fae, and shapeshifters. By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard. Three powerful enemies who look like supermodels; a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock; a creepy, tag-along ghost; and a new roommate, who happens to be the most-hated person and only vampire on campus. Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her friend Jenna is the number one suspect. Meanwhile, Sophie has a more personal shock to grapple with. Not only is her father the head of the prodigium council, he's the most powerful warlock in the world, and Sophie is his heir. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all prodigium, especially her.
