What is a drag king? Why have drag kings not been as numerous or as popular as their drag queen counterparts in popular culture? Are drag kings lesbians? The Drag King Book tells you everything you've wanted to know and more about the lives and performances of contemporary male impersonators. The book profiles many different performers, among them San Francisco's larger-than-life Elvis Herselvis and New York's mackdaddy Dred, and presents interviews with drag kings alongside descriptions and analyses of actual shows. Finally! A book on drag kings! Halberstam gives the writing here true-blue academic credibility, without taking the analysis into the jargon-riddled theoretical stratosphere. The kings featured here are treated with an honest respect and supportive critique you don't usually find in work once an academic gets their hands on it. The photographs are extremely engaging--if you never read the essays the book's worth it just for the pictures alone. A couple of the kings are also featured in Monika Treut's documentary, "Gendernauts," which is also quite engaging, though for very different reasons. Del LaGrace Volcano, who took the photos, is a very accomplished trans artist whose books are worth checking out as well. ( )
